Escape from Butcher Bay sequel in the works
Actor Vin Diesel, who helms the video game development studio Tigon, announced that a sequel to the Xbox title “The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay” is in the works. No mention was made on whether or not the sequel will appear on the current console generation or as a launch title for the next gaming interim. The game is expected to be a direct sequel to Butcher Bay and will most likely not tie in with a future Chronicles of Riddick feature film. Surprisingly, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay grossed more money than its film counterpart.

Brian Singer to work on video game project
Famed Hollywood director Brian Singer (X-men/The Usual Suspects) will be working on a new video game franchise under the Tigon Studios brand. According to various sources, the game will be a tactical action shooter based on the famed US law enforcement group the secret service. The game is being developed with the aid of a former secret service agent. There’s no word yet on when the title will appear on store shelves.

Gran Turismo 4 delayed
Devastating news for Sony racing fans as they’ve announced that the acclaimed racer “Gran Turismo 4” for the Playstation 2 has been delayed until the first quarter of 2005. In a press release, Sony PR manager Ron Eagle explained that the delay is due to in part to key finalization points in the title. Gamers were shocked earlier this Spring when Sony announced that Gran Turismo 4 wouldn’t feature online play. The game was originally slated to be released on Dec. 14.

Nintendo launches the DS
This week’s big release is Nintendo’s unique hand held, the DS. The dual screen device will give gamers the ability to play games in a different fashion by letting them interact with a title by using a touch screen and adding WiFi capabilities in the mix. The DS, which is expected to hit store shelves on Nov. 21, will come bundled with Pico Chat and a demo of Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt. The unit will launch with a total of five games; Super Mario 64 DS, Asphalt Urban GT, Spider-Man 2, Feel the Magic: XY and Madden NFL 2005 DS. The Nintendo DS retails for $199.99CDN.

Marvel Comics sues City of Heroes creator & publisher
Marvel Comics recently filed a lawsuit against developer Cryptic Studios and publisher NCSoft over their MMORPG PC title “City of Heroes”. The suit claims that the defendants infringed Marvel Comics’ copyrights by allowing players to create characters with likenesses similar to those found in the pages of their comic books. On its website, the developer called the lawsuit meritless and added that the company is confident that the District Court will reject all of Marvel’s claims and fully vindicate Cryptic Studios in all respects. Halo 2 sells 2.4 million copies on launch day
Microsoft announced that 2.4 million copies of “Halo 2” were sold in the US and Canada on Nov. 9, which amounted to sales worth more than $125 million. These numbers are pretty interesting when compared to the $70 million grossed by “The Incredibles” on opening weekend. Analysts expect the Xbox title to sell more than 3.5 million copies by Christmas.

Half-Life 2 leaked, but…
It was reported on Nov. 11 that some retailers jumped the Nov. 16 street date launch of the PC first person shooter “Half-Life 2” and started selling copies early on. Folks who had managed to get an early copy were surprised to find out that they couldn’t play the game until Nov. 16 due to the fact that Half-Life 2’s content is locked on developer Valve’s Steam servers. Users are obliged to register on the servers before being able to access the game. A very clever move by the folks at Valve.

Codemasters announce PSP support
Last week, Codemastes announced that they will be porting over two of their most respected driving title to Sony’s upcoming PSP handheld. In a press release, Codmasters revealed that “Colin McRae Rally 05” and “TOCA Race Driver 2” would be released on the unit in the spring of 2005. Colin McRae Rally 2005 is being developed by Six By Nine, while TOCA is in the hands of Sumo Digital. There is still no word yet on when the highly anticipated Sony PSP will reach North American store shelves.

Three flavours of the Xbox 2???
The internet has been running rampant with the rumour that Microsoft will release three versions of its upcoming Xbox 2 console next year. It is said that a lower priced non hard drive based unit will be released accompanied by an identical system with hard drive based storage capabilities. The third option would be a hybrid Xbox 2/PC that would feature PC and PVR functionalities and would include a hard drive, a wireless mouse, a keyboard and a CD burner. Microsoft has yet to comment on the units. The Xbox 2 (or Xbox Next) is expected in the Fall of 2005.

Metal Gear Solid 4 in the works
Konami confirmed that a fourth Metal Gear Solid iteration is in the works. It’s still unknown whether or not series creator Hideo Kojima will be involved in the title. Kojima did announce earlier this year that “Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater” would be the last title in the current story arc. Metal Gear Solid 3 is expected to hit store shelves this week.

Warren Spector exits Eidos
Famed veteran developer Warren Spector has announced his departure from Ion Storm, an Eidos owned development house. Eidos noted in a press release that Spector will continue to work with the company as an IP consultant. Spector rose to fame thanks to his involvement in the “Deus Ex” and “Thief” franchises. It is heavily rumored that Spector will join publisher Midway and head the company’s Austin Studios.

Sony’s Playstation Portable, a definitive dud?
Sony’s Playstation Portable (PSP) got some negative press recently when Sony’s Ken Kutaragi stated that the device would have a battery life of four to six hours. Kutaragi also iterated that the battery life would depend on which title you’re playing and at what settings you’re using the device. The CEO also stated that the battery life issue would be improved with time. Sony wants the PSP to have a 10 year shelve life; does this mean Sony plans to role out more than one PSP model throughout the years? The Sony PSP is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2005 with an approximate price tag of $180.00US. Nintendo’s upcoming handheld, the DS, is expected to have a 10 hour battery life span and will retail for $199.99CDN and will hit store shelves on Nov. 21.

Blizzard’s World of Warcraft gets a street date
Famed developer Blizzard announced last week that the eagerly anticipated massive multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) “World of Warcraft” (for the PC) will be hitting store shelves on Nov. 23 despite denying a Nov. 22 release date a few weeks back. The game will come in two flavours, a regular edition (which features 30-days of free gameplay) for $59.99CDN and a collector’s edition (which includes such items a World of Warcraft behind-the-scenes DVD, an exclusive in-game pet, a soundtrack CD, an Art of the World of Warcraft coffee table book, and collectable items) for approximately $90CDN. After the 30-day trial expires, gamers will have to fork out $16.90CDN a month to continue playing.

Yet another Hitman sequel in the works
The PR folks at Eidos Interactive announced that a sequel to “Hitman Contracts” is in the works for the Xbox, PS2 and PC platforms. The game will be known as Hitman: Blood Money and you will once again reprise the role of the deadly assassin Agent 47. The game will be powered by the new Glacier graphics engine, which should deliver a more realistic experience. Expect the title to show-up in the spring of 2005. There’s no word yet whether or not composer Jesper Kyd will be attached to the project.

Resident Evil 4 headed to the Playstation 2
GameCube fans might be a-little disappointed with this one as Capcom revealed that “Resident Evil 4” would also appear on the PS2 in late 2005. The famed survival horror title was due to be a GameCube exclusive, but weak sales for previous Resident Evil titles on the Nintendo console made the move eminent. Still, GameCube owners will get a chance to play RE4 long before their PS2 counterparts as the game is expected to hit store shelves on Jan. 11, 2005.

Halo 2 sales expected to surpass summer blockbusters
Microsoft expects “Halo 2” to generate more revenue in 24 hours than day one sales of any full feature movie in entertainment history. The game, which hit store shelves on Nov. 9, had strong pre-order numbers with over 1.5 million copies reserved in the US alone. The original Halo, an Xbox launch title, sold more than 5 million copies worldwide since its launch in 2001.

The iPhone OS version PopCap Games‘ highly addictive “Peggle” is available for $0.99 through the iTunes App Store. The catch is that you have until midnight on June 14 to make the purchase. Be warned though, you might have a hard time doing anything else but play Peggle on your iPhone/iPod Touch.
